Easter Lilies
![]()
Easter lilies, the popular name given for
any white-flowered lily that blooms
around Easter. The best known are
varieties of the white trumpet lily
(Lilium longiflorum), native to Japan.
The original white trumpet lily grew to
a height of three and produced 1 to 10
trumpet-shaped flowers, but the
cultivated varieties are slightly taller
and bear 15 to 20 flowers. The flowers,
which may reach a length of 8 inches,
are waxy-white with green-tinted bases.
Easter lilies were first raised in Bermuda,
but they are now widely cultivated in may
parts of the world. In Japan, growers have
developed varieties that can be stored for
long periods and forced to bloom at any
season.
Easter lilies are classified as genus Lilium
of the family Liliaceae (lily).
